Not everyone has the skills to compete on Masterchef, but there are some recipes that even the most basic of home cooks should have in their arsenal. Frying an egg is one of them.

As a classic breakfast food, a fried egg seems simple enough to do. But if you’re not adept in the kitchen, even that can feel like a mammoth task. In fact, even more experienced cooks are prone to overcooking the yolks and turning the whites brown…

If fried eggs are your favorite version of the protein, there is a way to ensure that your babies are brilliant every time. And all you need is some water.

Begin by adding a small amount of oil to the skillet and cracking in your eggs. Keeping the heat at medium, pour in some hot water after about 30 seconds, and baste the eggs until the whites are set, but the yolk is still runny. Then, remove from the pan, serve, and enjoy fried eggs that are perfectly cooked without a burnt edge in sight!

The reason this method works is because the steam from the water helps the eggs cook evenly, transferring heat all the way through, and preventing the need to do the flip which can cause the yolk to break. It also uses less oil!
