Most people don’t worry too much when they notice fruit flies invading their fruit bowl. But while fruit flies are not directly dangerous to humans, they can spread bacteria and contaminate the fruit, which will make you sick if you eat it. Because of that, you shouldn’t just ignore fruit flies when you notice them but actually prevent them from ever coming to your home.
Hack for Preventing Fruit Flies
Preventing fruit flies from appearing is actually more simple than you might think. You just need to wash all your fruit when you bring it home, especially bananas, according to Australian cleaning and household content creator Tracy, aka Nonstop Mumma.
In a recent reel shared on Instagram, Tracy explained that fruit flies are attracted to the “sweet scent of ripe fruit,” with bananas being their favorite landing spot. They then lay their eggs on the skin of the fruit, which quickly results in an infestation of the fruit bowl.
Tracy recommends washing bananas and all other fruit as this will remove the fruit flies’ eggs from the skin. The practice is also helpful for removing any bacteria, sprays, and other pests that might find their way onto the fruit.
