Is it really a surprise that this classic favorite is getting makeovers? The paradoxically named iced hot cocoa is a refreshing yet cozy beverage that combines the comforting flavors of hot chocolate with the coolness of an iced drink. Here’s how to whip up this delicious contradiction in a cup.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ice cubes
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together the milk, cocoa powder, and sugar.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat, constantly stirring until the cocoa and sugar are completely dissolved and the mixture is hot but not boiling. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Transfer the cocoa mixture to a heat-proof pitcher and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate until chilled.
  4. Fill a tall glass halfway with ice cubes. Pour the chilled cocoa mixture over the ice, leaving some room at the top for whipped cream if you’re using it.
  5. Dollop whipped cream on top of the cocoa if desired, and sprinkle with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder for that extra touch of indulgence.
