Hops are the most important component of any IPA, adding bitterness and a depth of flavor to the beer which gives it the telltale characteristics of an India Pale Ale.

One of the most popular flavors which IPAs acquire thanks to hopes are various citrusy tones, which often leads to a beer whose citrus flavors are the most dominant taste that you’ll experience. If you like citrus and want to find IPAs that are dominated by its flavors, here are some hop varieties to seek out!

Citra

The name should tell you all you need to know about Citra hops. This hop strain typically adds grapefruit, lime, and even tropical fruit tones to beer which makes them have plenty of citrus character.

Amarillo

Lemon, orange, and grapefruit flavors are the citrus holy trinity which results from the addition of Amarillo hops to a beer. Originating in Washington state, this hop variety is now cultivated and used throughout the world.

Cascade

One of the pioneer hops in American craft brewing is the Cascade variety, whose grapefruit tones are combined with a spicy and herbal backbone which make its unique citrus flavor a favorite in beer making.
