There are so many different kinds of sugar at the store, but the most well-known types are white and brown sugar. You might be wondering what the difference between the two are (if there even is a difference!). Is one healthier than the other? Or sweeter? We’re here to break down exactly what the differences are between white and brown sugar.

What is White Sugar?

White sugar is derived from the sugarcane plant. In the process, it becomes a sugary liquid called molasses before being processed to remove the white sugar crystals from the molasses. This process creates the white granules you know to be white sugar.

What is Brown Sugar?

Brown sugar is derived from the same beginning processes as white sugar, but after the molasses is separated from the white crystals, some of the molasses is then added back into it. Adding the molasses makes the sugar a bit sweeter and more moist.

Is Brown Sugar Healthier?

The truth is, most brown sugar has the same nutritional value as white sugar, since they are processed in the same way. However, if you buy unrefined brown sugar, it is a bit less processed than regular white or brown sugar.
