You’ve probably heard it a thousand times, whether it be from your parents, your health coach, or that random grocer down the street: beans are really good for you. We get it, beans are super healthy—but why? What is it about them that’s so healthy, and why should we go out of our way to incorporate them into our diet?
First and foremost, beans, like other legumes, contain a good amount of protein. White beans are especially rich in calcium, and in fact contain an amount similar to that of milk. Other nutrients that whites beans possess are known for their importance and contribution to bone health, including potassium, magnesium, copper, and zinc.
Beans obviously have many varieties, which differ in size, texture, color, and overall properties. In most stores, you can get red, black, white beans, and more. However, although the nutritional values of most dried beans are similar, white beans surpass all others in the impressive amounts of calcium and iron it contains.
Finally, in addition to all of their amazing health benefits, beans are also incredibly tasty. They’re also easy to obtain, inexpensive, and can be easily incorporated into many dishes.
