The Easiest Way to Ripen an Avocado

Avocado has a magical ability to turn any plain meal into a delicacy, but there’s a very short window when it’s perfectly ripe. It’s usually either not ripe enough, and when you check it a few hours later, it’s too late for it. Did you know that you can speed up the process and have a perfect avocado just when you need it?

Having the Tools

There’s no special equipment required—you already have everything you need. This handy trick can be done with some plastic wrap and a microwave.

How to Do It

If you need a ripe avocado right now but you only have an unripe one, you can try this quick and easy fix. Get some plastic wrap (make sure it’s the microwave-safe type), cut the avocado in half, and remove its pit. Wrap each half and microwave for two minutes on high setting. Let the halves cool down a bit, so you can hold them, and run them under some cold water. This will stop them from cooking and you’ll be left with perfectly ripe avocado that’s great for spreading on bread or making guacamole.

Other Methods

How do you know you have the right avocado for this? Unripe avocados are hard when you touch them and have a brighter green color compared to ripe avocados that are soft and have darker skin. Once an avocado turns black, it’s usually too late to use it.
