With beautiful jewel-pink flesh, grapefruit is the queen of the citrus orchard. It has a gorgeous aroma, a complex sweet-bitter flavor, and boasts some amazing health benefits.

However, this fabulous fruit is quite tricky to eat without making a huge mess. If you try and peel it and break it into segments like an orange, you’re likely to end up drenched in sticky juice. Follow our fail-safe method for the best way to eat a grapefruit.

The Method

  1. Take a clean cutting board and lie your grapefruit on its side, Make sure the stem end is pointing to the left or right, NOT the top or bottom.
  2. Cut through the middle so your grapefruit is in two bowl-shaped halves.
  3. Take a small sharp knife and cut around the perimeter of the grapefruit, separating the flesh from the rind.
  4. Then make cuts to separate the flesh from each segment membrane. This will make it easier to scoop the juicy pulp out with a spoon.
  5. You might have created a LOT of juice during this process which will pool within the grapefruit. If you like, you can drink this with a straw before you start eating so none spills and goes to waste!
  6. If your grapefruit is very bitter, you can sprinkle the top with sugar.
  7. Now that your grapefruit is prepared, you can eat it with a teaspoon or grapefruit fork and enjoy!

The Benefits

Grapefruit is a fantastic low-calorie snack. This juicy treat is bursting with fiber, potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Eating grapefruit regularly has been linked to better immunity, healthy weight loss, gut health, heart health, and glowing skin. It’s also a great way to boost your hydration!
