Peelers come in many different shapes and forms, each one with its own pros and cons. Swivel peelers and Y peelers are definitely two of the most popular types on the market, and this brief guide will help you determine which one you should use.

Swivel Peeler – Pros and Cons

A swivel peeler is the most popular type of straight peelers, with the blade mounted on a pivot. Its design will give you a good grip as you peel the produce, and you’ll usually make less waste than with other types because you won’t be applying too much pressure.

The swivel peeler is also the most versatile type on the market, and it works great with everything from potatoes to carrots and cucumbers, and you can even use it to save cheese and chocolate. Its only downside is that it’s hard to use with large and soft fruits and veggies.

Y Peeler – Pros and Cons

The shape of the Y peeler resembles a safety razor, and it was designed with larger produce in mind. It’s known as a speed peeler because it takes less time to peel long veggies when you’re using it, especially zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkins, and beets.

Because its blades tend to be bigger than with other types of peelers, it also does a great job shredding cabbage for coleslaw. Unfortunately, the Y peeler isn’t as intuitive as the swivel peeler, especially with smaller produce, and it creates more waste.
