Coleslaw is a classic side dish at any deli, and there are multiple ways to make it, some sweet and some garlicky. But coleslaw isn’t for everyone, because with its heavy mayo some find its sweetness off-putting. So here are some other sweet slaws which are less heavy on the mayo to make instead.

Carrot-Apple Slaw

Carrot-apple slaw or carrot-apple salad is a sweet, juicy, crunchy salad made from shredding, you guessed it, apple and carrot and combining the two. You can add some dressing such as apple cider vinegar or a dash of citrus juice if you like and even raisins or craisins. It’s fresher and lighter than coleslaw.

Sesame Cabbage Slaw

Using the same shredded cabbage you’d use for coleslaw, you can make a sesame-oil-and-honey dressing and add sesame seeds and craisins or pomegranate seeds for a more sweet/umami flavor. It’s also a good idea to add some fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley for a little something extra.

Sweet and Spicy Apple Slaw

This crunchy, acidic slaw uses a coleslaw veggie mix along with shredded apples, pickled jalapeño, cilantro, and mint to make a spicy-sweet, ultra-refreshing take on classic slaw. To dress it, use apple cider vinegar, salt, and pepper. You can also top it with raisins and sesame seeds for crunch.
