Oatmeal is one of the most popular breakfasts you can eat in the morning, but there are multiple ways you can prepare it. For the purpose of this article, we’re not going to discuss anything to do with overnight oats, and will talk primarily about good old-fashioned hot oatmeal. There are many different ways to make it, but the main debate comes down to whether you should cook it with milk or water. Here’s the argument for both of them.

Milk

The thing about using milk in your oatmeal is that your final product will be much creamier and richer than if you just used water. Then there’s also the fact that milk has a lot more intrinsic flavor than water. Ultimately, you should go with milk if you’re trying to make your oatmeal a little bit more adventurous and interesting.

Water

But while milk is a great choice, water is also a classic option, and here’s why. Sometimes you want the bring the flavor of the oatmeal forward, and water’s blandness achieves this better than anything. Water also cooks the oatmeal in a way that’s a lot more subtle and practical. Not to mention the fact that if you’re trying to avoid dairy, this option is an absolute no-brainer.
