Should You Break Spaghetti in Half Before Cooking It?

Pasta comes in many different shapes and forms, but spaghetti is definitely one of the most popular varieties. The only tricky part about it is that it’s sometimes difficult to fit it into a pot, but should you break your long pasta strands in half once that happens?

Cracking spaghetti in half is a big no-no for Italians, but many people still do it for practical reasons. Sometimes it’s the only way to stop the pasta strands from awkwardly sticking from your pot, but is there any way to break pasta right in the middle, without making a huge mess.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology tried to answer this question with an elaborate study back in 2018. They came to the conclusion that you can break spaghetti evenly in half by first twisting it at almost 360 degrees, before slowly bringing the two ends together to bend it.

Sounds like a lot of work, especially when you consider that Italians would shake their heads at the sight of broken spaghetti. That’s because spaghetti should be eaten by twirling it around your fork and that’s pretty much impossible when you break it into tiny pieces. If you don’t enjoy this eating method, you can always opt for short pasta varieties, such as farfalle, penne, and fusilli.
