In the small town of Blace, Serbia, there’s a monument to plums. It’s not very common to see monuments that celebrate fruits, but the residents of this place had a strong reason to erect a statue in honor of plums back in 2012. So how did this all happen in the first place? Join us for a quick history lesson.

Sacred Fruit

Originally called Spomenik Šljivi, this plum monument was designed by sculptor Dragan Drobnjak. The monument was unveiled during the annual Plum Day Festival. Blace and the region around it rely on plums a lot for survival. Many people grow plum trees and make various plum products to sell, and jam, juice, compote, or famous rakija (plum brandy) are just some of them.

An Annual Festival

The festival gathers many people every year in August. Those who attend can enjoy numerous concerts, a fair, and fruit-growing lectures. If you happen to be in Serbia during the festival and want to visit, you can get to Blace from Belgrade with a 2.5-hour drive or with a bus. You will find the monument in the park in the center of the town.
