Canned food is definitely one of the best food inventions since sliced bread. It is easy to cook (or ready to eat right away), and it can last for an impressive amount of time. However, not all canned food is made the same.

Some food reacts well to being canned, maintaining its flavor and nutrients. But the other just becomes a lot worse version of itself. Luckily, we don’t have to test it ourselves to find out the best and worst canned food. INSIDER recently reached out to a number of professional chefs who shared their expertise on the matter.

The Best Canned Food: Corn, Beans, Tomatoes …

When it comes to the best canned food, the chefs love corn and beans. According to them, both are surprisingly good in their canned version and save you tons of prep time. It is the same with all different types of canned tomatoes. The chefs also think you should give a chance to canned pumpkin, canned water chestnuts, and “canned flavors” like capers, anchovies, or olives.

The Worst Canned Food: Stocks, Fruits, Green Veggies …

The reason why chefs don’t appreciate canned stocks is that they are usually packed with sodium. On the other hand, canned fruit is a no-go due to them being stored in sweetened syrups and losing its nutrients. The latter also happens to canned green veggies, which is why you should always go for fresh or frozen variants. Among other frowned-upon canned food are canned meats, canned chili, and canned soups and sauces.
