Okra Is A Summertime Gift

Okra is a gorgeous summer vegetable native to Africa. It can be a little slimy if you don’t cook it right, but if you do, it can be just what you need for any summer dish. There are so many ways to prepare okra but here are just some of the best.

Pickle It!

Since the best okra really is in the summer, have okra all year round with pickled okra. Just as you would pickle any other vegetable, follow the precautions for sterilizing and sealing the jars. As for the contents, add in the okra with a green chile pepper, garlic clove, and just a teaspoon on dill seeds or fresh dill. Once it’s pickled, you can add it as you would any other pickled ingredient or make a statement with a pickled okra and shrimp salad.

Fry It!

Fried okra is beyond delicious. To make it really crispy, the trick is to soak it in buttermilk before and use flour and cornmeal for the dredge. If you want it spicy, you can add in paprika or even cayenne as well, but if not, just stick to salt and pepper. Fry to perfection and eat straight away!
