We all have at least one cutting board in our kitchen and using it seems pretty simple. There are, however, a few basic things everyone should know about cutting boards in order to stay safe in the kitchen. Here are a few common mistakes people make when using cutting boards.

Using the same board for meat and veggies

It’s a good practice to use separate cutting boards for meat and fresh produce such as fruits, veggies or eggs. The reason for this is to avoid the possibility of cross-contamination and spread of bacteria, which can happen even if you wash the produce properly.

Using slippery cutting boards

We don’t have to explain that using slippery boards can be pretty risky and nerve-racking, so make sure to secure your board with rubber grips or place a kitchen towel underneath it.

Using old cutting boards

Old cutting boards with deep indentations are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. This is a clear sign you need to replace them, but you can always find a new purpose for old boards in your home.

Putting it in a dishwasher

Some plastic cutting boards can be washed in a dishwasher, but it’s always safer to hand-wash the boards with hot water and dish soap.
