Are you hosting a dinner party and you haven’t quite mastered food plating? Food plating is an art and it takes some time to get it right. But once you learn how to style your food, your meals will look even more appetizing. If you’re looking to take your food plating skills to the next level, here are five tips to improve your styling.

Plan Ahead

The most important tip is to plan ahead. You can’t just expect to do things on the go and for everything to come together. Think about how the components will interact with each other and how they will look after you cook them.

Get New Tools

Have fun with some new gadgets like tongs, tweezers, precision spoons, piping bags, squeeze bottles, and palette knives.

Play with Texture

Get creative with texture by having sauces on the bottom and then a protein, followed by something crispy or crunchy. Not only will the meal be more visually appealing, but it will also taste better.

Add Lots of Color

A plate full of color is much more exciting than one with just the same color. Vegetables and starches are a great way to add color to your plate.

Add a Garnish

Give your food a restaurant touch by adding garnishes like herbs, oils, or sauces. Be thoughtful of which ones you use and try to add ones that are in the dishes. Garnishes are also great at covering up mistakes: if your cake splits in the middle, just add some whipped cream or ice cream.
