Making Your Own Earl Grey Tea is Easy and Fun

Earl grey tea isn’t actually one that grows naturally; instead, it’s a combination of black tea with bergamot leaves. Though you can buy earl grey at the store, it’s so much more fun to make it at home. Better yet, you can make it for your friends and give it out as gifts, perfect for the upcoming holiday season! The recipe below makes one medium-sized teapot worth of tea, but if you want to give it as a present or make some in advanced, just increase the amounts of each ingredient.

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon of loose black tea
  • 3 teaspoons of dried bergamot leaves

Instructions:

  1. First, take the dried bergamot leaves and grind them so they are not a powder, but roughly the same size as the loose black tea.
  2. You can do the first step with a mortar and pestle, or simply put them into a plastic bag and use a rolling pin or pan to crush them. Don’t use a spice grinder or they will be too fine.
  3. Mix the loose black tea with the bergamot leaves and put them into an infuser.
  4. Put the infuser into a teapot, pour hot water over it, and steep for 3-5 minutes.
  5. Save the infuser and use it for one more cup of tea since it’s weaker, but it still can be used!
