Naan are the ultimate accompaniment to a curry—soft, chewy, and with lots of fresh flavor, they are a delicious alternative or addition to rice. Here’s a recipe for how you can make them easily at home to enhance any curry night.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup of warm milk
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Garlic butter (optional, for brushing)
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
- In a bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then sprinkle active dry yeast over the mixture. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is frothy. In a large mixing bowl, sift the all-purpose flour. Add baking powder and salt, and mix well.
- Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture, plain yogurt, and melted butter. Stir the ingredients together until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into a ball. Roll out each ball into a teardrop or oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Place the rolled dough on the preheated skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side or until bubbles form, and the naan becomes golden brown.
- If desired, brush the cooked naan with garlic butter and sprinkle with chopped cilantro. Serve your homemade naan warm alongside your favorite curry or dish.
