Naan are the ultimate accompaniment to a curry—soft, chewy, and with lots of fresh flavor, they are a delicious alternative or addition to rice. Here’s a recipe for how you can make them easily at home to enhance any curry night.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup of warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Garlic butter (optional, for brushing)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then sprinkle active dry yeast over the mixture. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is frothy. In a large mixing bowl, sift the all-purpose flour. Add baking powder and salt, and mix well.
  2. Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture, plain yogurt, and melted butter. Stir the ingredients together until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  4. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into a ball. Roll out each ball into a teardrop or oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Place the rolled dough on the preheated skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side or until bubbles form, and the naan becomes golden brown.
  6. If desired, brush the cooked naan with garlic butter and sprinkle with chopped cilantro. Serve your homemade naan warm alongside your favorite curry or dish.
