Learn to Make Ham and Melon Bites, a Spanish Favorite

What is your favorite summer hors d’oeuvre? Plenty of tasty, refreshing bites are out there to be prepared for the hottest months of the year, but we’re here to share our favorites with you.

Ham and melon might seem like a strange combination, but it’s all the rage in some Mediterranean countries like Spain. Here is how to prepare this dish, a beautiful combination of savory and sweet that will help you to cool off without a doubt.

Ingredients

  • ½ of a honeydew or Santa Claus melon, cubed
  • 10 slices of Serrano ham (or prosciutto if Serrano isn’t available)
  • Toothpicks

Instructions

  • Start off by cubing a half of a melon. Try to find a popular Spanish melon which is known as the “Santa Claus melon,” which has a firm, slightly crunchy texture. If you can’t find it, however, honeydew is very similar and will do the trick just fine.
  • Set the cubed melon aside, and take the slices of Serrano ham (or prosciutto) and cut them with your hands into pieces about an inch long and an inch thick.
  • Take your toothpicks and put a piece of ham onto each one. Next, take each melon cube and do the same until all of your toothpicks have both a piece of melon and a piece of ham on them.
  • Chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, and your ham and melon bites will be ready to be enjoyed! Be sure to eat the two at the same time off of the toothpick, however strange it might seem.
  • Enjoy!
