Keeping Lettuce Fresh is Easier Than You Think

Lettuce is one of the most convenient leafy green vegetables to add to any meal, but this is only true if you have some fresh leaves available in the fridge. We often buy it, store it, and forget about it before it’s too late. Here’s what you can do to keep lettuce fresh and actually use it up for a change.

Paper Towels Are Your Friends

If you’re used to keeping the lettuce in its original plastic container or bag it came with, you probably noticed that it can get damp and spoil faster. The solution is pretty simple and doesn’t cost a thing. Simply put one or two slightly damp paper towels at the bottom of the plastic container and then put the lettuce on top and store as usual.

The logic behind this is that lettuce requires moisture and air circulation, which is why a damp paper is a perfect wrapper for it. It will prevent your lettuce from drying out while allowing some air to flow and keep it crisp.

Chop and Keep Dry

If you buy head lettuce instead of pre-packed leaves, the best thing you can do is to chop it, wash it, remove the excess water with a salad spinner, and pack as described above.
