Coffee fruit is super trendy, but it actually doesn’t have much to do with your morning brew—it relates to the part of the coffee that is discarded once the bean is removed. Specifically, coffee fruit extract, which is also known as coffee cherry or coffee berry extract, is the latest food trend and some are even crediting it as a superfood. But what exactly is coffee fruit and how do you enjoy it?

What It Is

In case you didn’t know, coffee beans actually come from coffee fruit, which is a small fruit that grows green and turns purple or red when it’s ripe. For coffee, the beans are usually removed from the fruit and the fruit winds up being thrown away.

Where To Find It

At supermarkets, you’re likely to find bottled coffee fruit extract, which is made from coffee fruit. The fruit has a milder and sweeter taste more similar to cherries and hibiscus than black coffee. The extract is great in coffee, tea, or smoothies.

Good For You

In regards to the health benefits, coffee fruit is high in antioxidants and nutrients, which can help fight off cell damage and chronic diseases. Like coffee, it’s caffeinated and gives you energy, but it has less caffeine than coffee. So what are you waiting for? Are you ready to try coffee fruit?
