Canned food is made to have a long shelf life, but this doesn’t mean that the shelf in question can be placed anywhere. If not stored properly, canned food can lose some of its quality or turn bad before the expiry date. To avoid this from happening, follow these tips for storing canned food.

Check for Damage Before Storing

The first thing you need to do is to check the condition of the can and see if it might have some damage or defects. This can tamper with the seal and cause fast spoilage of the food inside, so avoid cans that have any bulges or damage.

Store in a Cold, Dark, and Dry Place

Cold and dry places offer optimal conditions for canned food to live up to its expiry date. You also need to make sure there is no direct sunlight that might cause temperature fluctuation.

Use Plastic Containers

Using a container for canned food might seem like overkill, but it is highly recommended. Plastic containers will help you have your canned food neatly organized while also protecting it from moisture.

Rotate Your Canned Food Stock

Canned foods can last long, but it doesn’t last forever. You should rotate your canned food stock, storing the newly purchased cans at the back and eating the previous purchases first. You can also store them according to the expiry date, going from the longest at the back to the shortest at the front.
