For being such a simple staple food, it’s surprisingly easy to mess up when you’re cooking rice. If you always find yourself scraping away at a layer of burnt rice at the bottom of the pot, here are some possible reasons why it’s happening.

The Heat is Too High

It might seem obvious, yet we still tend to make this mistake when we cook rice. If you have the heat on too high, your chances of burning your rice are also high. After the water boils, turn your heat down to its lowest setting.

Not Enough Water

If your rice is burning, there’s a high likelihood that you didn’t add enough water. Next time you make your rice, try adding in an extra 1/8 cup of water and see if it helps your burning problem.

Leaving the Rice on Too Long

Another possible reason you may be accidentally burning your rice is if you leave it on the burner for too long. In fact, you may be going right past the perfect rice stage and then burning it after. To avoid this, try taking your rice off the stove a bit earlier than you think you should, but leaving the lid on and waiting. The steam should cook the rice the last little bit.
