One of the most satisfying meals is crispy, oily fried chicken. If you’ve chosen a vegan lifestyle, you might miss that meal sometimes. Luckily you can mimic the taste using all vegan ingredients! Here’s how to make delicious fried tofu, chicken-style.

You’ll Need:

  • A block of tofu, cut into steaks
  • Vegan buttermilk
  • Breadcrumbs of choice
  • Ground flax seed mixed with water or other egg replacement
  • Flour
  • Garlic powder
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Start by marinating your tofu in the vegan buttermilk with salt, pepper, and whatever you like for a few hours in the fridge. If you don’t have vegan buttermilk on hand, you can make some by combining a cup of plant milk with a tablespoon of lemon juice and allowing to sit for a few minutes until thick.

Next, get your breading station ready. On separate plates or bowls, place your egg replacement, flour, and bread crumbs.
Heat the oil in a pan. When it’s ready, take a slice of tofu and dip it first in the flour, then the egg replacement, and finally the breading. Once it’s coated, carefully transfer it to the hot oil. Cook each slice this way until browned and crispy. Place on paper towel to soak up excess oil.
