How to Make the Perfect Sticky Rice

Sticky rice is a type of short-grain rice with a high starch content. The “sticky” refers to its glue-like, sticky texture when cooked. This rice is a staple in many Asian cuisines and pairs perfectly with curry, stir fries, or grilled meats.

Before you get started you’ll need three things:

  • Napoleon hat
  • Special sticky rice pot
  • A cheesecloth

Take a large bowl and add two cups of sticky rice. Add cold water into the bowl and stir thoroughly until the water becomes white. Then, pour out the starchy water. Repeat the process three or four times until the water is clear. Next, leave the rice to soak for 6-12 hours.

After the soaking process, bring the rice pot to a boil (2-3 inches of water on the bottom of the pot). The unique thing about this process is that you don’t actually immerse the rice in water. Instead, place the Napoleon hat on top of the pot and add the rice into the hat.

Wet the cheesecloth and cover the hat with the damp cloth. Cover with a lid.

Let the rice cook for 13 minutes. Then, flip or stir the rice, cover it back up, and let cook for another 7 minutes.

You’re done!
