Maybe you’ve seen pictures of elaborate charcuterie boards on Instagram or Pinterest and feel a little intimidated by this appetizer. But the truth is, it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Ingredients

Plan on buying a selection of cured meats, cheeses, some bread or crackers, as well as fruits like grapes, figs, and apples. You can also add some nuts, pickles, olives, and jams. Don’t worry too much about having every single item. Just pick a selection that sounds good to you.

Presentation

This is where the magic of charcuterie really lies. When arranging your board, you’ll want to use a large plate or wooden cutting board. Your aim is to cover the space without overcrowding it. Arrange ingredients in small clusters around the board until it’s full. Experiment with layering and overlapping for an additional twist. For example, place meats and cheese in overlapping layers to make it more visually interesting.

Enjoy the Process

At the end of the day, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Follow your instincts and play around with the layout. Think of it as a fun puzzle that you assemble for your guests to enjoy.
