Like with most things, homemade hummus is way better than the store-bought stuff, and it isn’t even that hard to make. That being said, there are certain tricks you can use that will make your DIY hummus turn out way more delicious than it would otherwise. So here are the steps you should definitely not skip next time you make hummus.

Use Tahini

A lot of the time, when you look up hummus recipes, you’ll find ones that say you should blend your chickpeas with olive oil. Well, this is just wrong. Authentic hummus is made with tahini, a sesame seed paste, which has much more flavor than olive oil. Make sure that that is what you use when you make yours for the best results.

Don’t Forget the Salt and Lemon

If you taste your hummus and it tastes like it’s missing something, the two most likely culprits are salt and lemon. A little goes a long way when it comes to these flavor enhancers, but they’re definite must-haves.

Add the Oil Later

Okay, just because we said not to make your hummus with olive oil doesn’t mean you should put the olive oil bottle away. Even if you don’t add any other toppings, adding a drizzle of olive oil over the top of your hummus is crucial.
