If you’re a plant-based eater, chances are pretty good that you’ve encountered a decent amount of meat substitutes in your life. Many of them are highly processed and have to be purchased frozen. But there is one that is incredibly simple, can be made at home, uses only whole ingredients, and is deceptively delicious. We’re talking about the carrot dog. Here’s how to make one.

Ingredients

  • Carrots
  • Hot dog buns
  • Soy sauce
  • Water or veggie broth
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Maple syrup
  • Paprika
  • Liquid smoke
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Black pepper

Directions

  • Peel your carrots. Ideally, you can round them off so they are hot dog shaped.
  • Boil the carrots for eight to ten minutes until you can pierce them with a fork, but they’re not mushy.
  • Combine all the ingredients (that aren’t the carrot or hot dog bun) into a liquid marinade.
  • Marinate the carrots in the marinade overnight. If you don’t have the time, a few hours works, too.
  • Remove the carrots from the marinade and cook on the grill for two to three minutes per side. Alternatively, you can cook on a non-stick skillet for five minutes per side.
  • Serve on a hot dog bun with whatever hot dog toppings you like.
