Plastic cutting boards may not look as fancy as wooden ones, but a lot of people opt for them because they’re a more affordable option. They may not be as durable and versatile as some other alternatives, but you can still put them to some good use if you keep these things in mind.

Plastic Type

The biggest problem with plastic boards is their short life span, but you can prolong it by opting for quality plastic. Try finding a board made from high-density polyethylene because they tend to be more resilient and they’ll last you for longer, especially if you’re careful with your knives.

Dishwasher Usage

Plastic boards are technically dishwasher friendly, but you should tread lightly when cleaning them this way. The heat from the dishwasher may soften some plastics and make it easier for bacteria to grow if there are any grooves and scratches on your board.

Time for Replacement

Speaking of grooves and scratches, there will come a point where you’ll be dealing with so many that your board will become pretty useless. This will make cleaning and sanitizing your board even more difficult, and you should probably replace it once that moment comes.
