Making chili from scratch is a time-consuming process, so we don’t blame you for reaching for the canned version every once and a while. But as you probably figured, canned chili can never taste as good as the one you make yourself.

You can settle for not enjoying your chili from the can as much or do something about it. As it turns out, there are several ways you can improve canned chili and get it close to the homemade version.

Add Fresh Veggies

Adding fresh veggies like bell peppers, onions and chilies will significantly improve the taste of canned chili. Just cook them up on medium heat until they soften up, and then pour in the chili.

Spice it Up

Introducing spices like cumin and powdered chili or chili flakes will get the best out of canned chili. It will add significantly more flavor to the equation.

More Meat is Always Better

Some canned chili varieties either come with mushy meat that lacks the consistency you want, or the ratio is heavily leaning towards the red beans. To fix this up, brown some ground meat in a pan and then mix it up with chili. You’ll get more of the good stuff and an immediately more satisfying product.
