Steaming vegetables is simply the best. It’s quick and convenient, it preserves nutrients more than many other methods, and the vegetables turn out delicious. So if you’re not yet steaming your veggies, you should start—and here’s how.

Step One

In order to make sure that all of your veggies cook at the same time and are done together, start by chopping them up into uniform, ideally bite-sized pieces.

Step Two

Okay, now comes the cooking. Fill a pot with an inch of water. Put a steamer basket on top and boil the water. Once the water is at a full, rolling boil, you can place your veggies in the steamer basket and cover them with a lid. Cook until they come out fork-tender, or to your preference. You can expect smaller veggies to be done in three to five minutes while larger, tougher ones might take from ten to 12.

Step Three

The most important step is seasoning your veggies to bring out their best flavor. Remove them from the heat, drain the water, and toss with olive oil, butter, or salt. You can also add lemon juice, herbs, and spices to taste. You’ll never want to eat vegetables in any other way again.
