Mardi Gras is a Carnival celebration that happens in all of Louisiana, including the state’s capital of New Orleans. The celebrations are completed with delicious food, and the most popular dessert is King Cake.

If you’ve never been to Mardi Gras, you may not know what King Cake is. It got its name from the Three Kings Day holiday and it’s a tradition to eat it during the carnival, but it’s typically available in bakeries all year long. You will recognize it by its decoration that uses green, gold, and purple sugar. Inside the cake is a bean that represents the baby, but many use a tiny plastic baby instead. Finding the baby in your slice of cake is a sign of luck and prosperity.

The colors of the cake are also symbolic. Each of them has assigned meaning. Gold represents power, green is for faith, and purple stands for justice. The inside of the cake can vary, so some bakers use cream cheesecakes while others choose fruit fillings.
