Can you imagine ketchup that’s made of anything other than tomatoes? Well, there’s actually a popular type of ketchup in the Philippines called banana ketchup, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. You may have tried it before, but for those who haven’t, banana ketchup may be just the thing they’re missing to complete some meals.

Banana ketchup was invented at the beginning of the 20th century by Filipina food scientist María Orosa who studied food chemistry in the U.S. Her goal was to come up with sustainable recipes that could be made from ingredients locally grown in the Philippines.

You can get banana ketchup in stores (depending on where you live) or you can make your own at home. The ingredients include bananas, sugar, spices, and vinegar. The sweet condiment can be used with many different foods, from French fries to meat dishes, rice, vegetables, and anything you can think of.
