When it comes to wintertime, nothing is more comforting than a hot drink and a sweet, tasty snack. With this simple recipe, take inspiration from the Brits and have a cup of tea and an authentic British staple to add a little more luxury to your life.

Authentic English scones are served with a hot cup of tea as a light afternoon snack. They taste fairly plain on their own, but the closest food to compare them to is an American Biscuit—think of a biscuit as the scone’s buttery, savory cousin.

In England, they’re traditionally served with butter and jam, or clotted cream (which is a thick cream that sits nicely on top of the jam). If you want to recreate the classic combo, try crème fraîche or even mascarpone cream whipped with a little heavy cream.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons caster sugar
  • 7 tablespoons butter, chilled and grated
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • ½ cup 1% or 2% milk
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the yogurt and milk and then beat in the egg.
  3. Stir the egg mixture gently into the dry flour mixture until it forms a dough-like consistency.
  4. Clean and flour a surface and then roll or pat the dough into a circle shape.
  5. Try to roll the dough to a thickness of at least an inch, to make sure the scones rise nicely.
  6. Cut into approximately 8 circles and place on a floured baking tray.
  7. Brush the circles with a little milk or egg wash so they turn golden brown in the oven.
  8. Bake at 390°F for 10-15 minutes, or until they’ve risen and they’re a delicious golden brown color.
  9. Serve with butter, jam, or clotted cream. Enjoy!
