If you didn’t grow up in the States, the concept of a funnel cake may seem rather foreign. Yet, the crispy treat actually has its origins in Germany and was brought to the US by immigrants who arrived in Pennsylvania during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Made by pouring batter into hot cooking oil to deep fry it, the result is a crunchy swirl of dough that is often topped with powdered sugar. No, it’s not totally healthy; but yes, it is delicious!

Funnel cakes often feature at county fairs, but if you have a craving for the delight, KFC may be your new hangout spot. The fried chicken franchise has added a new item to its menu that is inspired by the funnel cake we all know and love.

Deemed Funnel Cake Fries, it involves giving the potato sticks the sweet treatment by making them crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside and then sprinkling them with powdered sugar.

Does that make them a side? A dessert? Either way, KFC believes that they should be paired with chicken tenders or a burger, and we’re not against it.

As it stands, the Funnel Cake Fries are only available in Kansas City, Omaha, St. Louis, Northwestern Arkansas, and Southeastern Oklahoma, but here’s hoping they go countrywide.
