Britain is home to a robust culinary tradition that is centered around the “pub”. We all know the pub as a drinking establishment, but it’s less well known for its food. Here are some of the most popular “pub-grub” dishes that you can try for yourself.
Full English Breakfast
Despite the name, the full English breakfast is often served throughout the day, not just in the morning. It’s a substantial plate of grilled sausages, bacon, hash browns, fried eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast and baked beans.
Roast Beef and Stilton Pie
This is a pastry pie that is filled with chunks of slow-roasted beef, onion, and a stilton gravy. Stilton is a strong cheese that gives an extra kick to the gravy sauce. The pie is typically served with salad, peas, and chips (chunky fries) or mashed potato.
Bangers and Mash
This is a dish made up of fat grilled English sausages, mashed potato, and garden peas. “Bangers” is the traditional English word for large sausages, the kind you also get with an English breakfast.
Fish and Chips
Perhaps the most famous of them all is the great fish and chips. This is deep-fried fish served with chips (thick fries), peas, and tartar sauce. The fish is usually cod, but haddock and plaice are also candidates.
