Exotic Fruits That are Worth Hunting Down

Apples, bananas, and pears, oh my! Nutritionists recommend a daily intake of 5 fruits and vegetables, but that doesn’t mean you need to be generic (dare we say boring) in your selection. Mix it up with these unusual gems.

Custard Apple

Fruit for dessert? Why not! Despite its name, a custard apple is not an apple at all. The fruit has a creamy texture, similar to an avocado. The other part of its name is, however, more accurate. The taste of a custard apple can resemble anything from bananas and peaches, to vanilla pudding. It goes brilliantly in shakes and yogurt, and can even be used in desserts like rice pudding.

Kiwano

The idea of banana and cucumber together may seem bizarre, but kiwanos make it work. Also known as the African horned cucumber and jelly melon, kiwano has spikes on the outside, but is gelatinous on the inside, making it easy to scoop up with a spoon. Adding a little sugar or salt can enhance the flavor.

Durian

We warn you—durian is not for everyone. With its pungent scent and strong flavor, durian is definitely an acquired taste. While some have described it as tasting like custard with almonds, others claim it reminds them of rotten onions. You can be the judge (if you’re brave enough).
