Ever Heard of a Macrobiotic Diet?

The macrobiotic diet has become more popular over the past few years and it’s based on the Zen Buddhist idea that everything in our world has either yin or yang energy. Macrobiotics was developed by George Ohsawa, a Japanese philosopher in the 1930s. It’s all about leading a lifestyle idea that advocates a thoughtful approach to nutrition.

Macrobiotics heavily relies on seasonal produce, and more than 50% of the advised food intake is made of whole grains (brown rice, barley, oats, etc.) and beans (tofu, miso, seaweed, etc.). The rest of the diet includes fresh and fermented fruits and vegetables and occasional meat or fish.

The diet includes some general rules to help you with your food-related behaviors. The focus is on eating organic food and only consuming food only when you’re hungry instead of following a schedule. It also includes cooking with a flame instead of using electric appliances.

The recommendations on specific foods vary according to where you are in the world as well as the seasons and weather, but the dominant idea is to reduce animal products, consume local organic produce, and eat in moderation.
