Most of us are looking for a balance between taste and health when it comes to the food we eat. We want our meals to be exciting and delicious, but good for us too. There are some easy swaps we can make, to ensure that we are eating as naturally as possible, without substituting taste for health.

Flavored Yogurts

Rather than buying pre-made flavored yogurts, buy good quality (organic if possible) Greek or natural yogurt. Flavor it at home, using natural ingredients such as honey, fruit compote, or peanut butter. Often, the pre-made varieties are full of unnecessary sugars and emulsifiers, so by making your own you are avoiding a lot of added nasties.

Homemade Granola

Granola is one of the easiest foods to make at home, and doing so can really pay off, as shop-bought varieties are often full of sugar, glucose syrup, preservatives, and other extras. Make sure you get wholegrain oats for a fiber boost, and if you’re using honey to sweeten, check that it’s pure and doesn’t have any glucose or corn syrup added in.

Bring Butter Back

If you don’t want to eat butter on your toast, try olive oil or the more neutral-tasting avocado oil instead. If you are going to buy a margarine, really check its ingredients list – many of these spreads contain long lists of preservatives and emulsifiers which aren’t good for health (or taste!) Whilst butter is high in fat, if you’re buying organic then you are eating a high-quality, entirely natural product.
