You’re at the supermarket, and you saunter down to the produce section. Now you’re starting to feel good about yourself because everything smells fresh and you’re about to buy something healthy. But before you start taking out those plastic bags and filling them up with mounds of tasty fruit, try not to make this common mistake—taking too many.

When we are excited about eating healthy and fresh produce, we tend to load up on more fruit than we need. You can’t have too many healthy items in your house, right? While this makes sense from a nutritional standpoint, it may not be the case from an economical standpoint. Ultimately, if you load up too many fruit, most of them will probably go bad before you get a chance to eat them.

Some fruit, such as oranges, are less likely to go bad too quickly. But fruit such as nectarines, apples, or mangos will go bad pretty quickly unless you eat them fast. It is essentially a race against the clock as soon as you get into your house before the fruit starts to mold. So when you’re in the produce section, make sure to only get a limited amount—or at least the amount that you know your household will be able to finish in a short period of time.
