Don’t Like Spending Money on Caviar? Make Fake One Instead

It is hard not to like caviar. It is flavorful and can be consumed in various ways, from putting it on a toast to combining it with other dishes. The only downside is that it can get a bit pricey.

If you enjoy the taste of caviar but don’t like spending money on it, we have just a thing for you—fake caviar.

How to Make “Fake Caviar”

Fake caviar is quite popular on TikTok, where you can find numerous recipes that will help you get something similar to caviar for much less money. One particularly popular recipe has been shared by user Michael Ligier.

In a video he posted on TikTok, which has more than a million views, Ligier fake caviar that looks identical to the real thing. And according to him, it also tastes like one.

He starts by putting a glass of neutral oil in a freezer for an hour. The list of neutral oils includes safflower oil, peanut oil, and grapeseed oil. Then Ligier adds ginger, dry Shitake mushrooms, and kombu and nori seaweed to a pot of water and lets it “steep” for five to ten minutes. He also introduces some soy sauce to the pot as a “secret ingredient.”

The next step is to strain the liquid from the pot and mix it with “one percent of its weight” in agar powder. Then, Ligier brings the mixture to a boil and takes it off the heat. Dots of the mixture are then introduced to the neutral oil, forming fake caviar at the bottom.

All you need to do next is to strain the fake caviar, rinse it under water, and dig in. Check out Ligier’s video with full instructions below.
