Don’t Get Rid of That Old, Rusty Cast Iron Pan!

Cast iron is a type of dishware that you can seriously have for a lifetime. So, if you’re going through your garage or a family member’s kitchen and see a rusty, old cast iron, do not throw it away! You can save it so easily and you’ll be glad when you did when it’s done.

First, lay out some newspaper or paper towels as this process is a little messy.

Cut up a potato or two so you can comfortably hold it in your hand, as this will be your sponge for this mission.

Then, cover the rusty area you want to work on first with coarse salt.

Use the potato to scrub the rust off the pan until it’s gone.

If you need some extra help, use the skin side of the potato to help the really tough parts. Do this to all the rusty areas.

Once the pan is clean, rinse with hot water, and pat dry. You can also put it onto the stove to boil off extra water. Once it’s cooled,  spread oil all over it and wipe off the extra with a paper towel. Bake at 400-500 F for 1-hour upside down. Turn off the oven and let the cast iron cool in there. Once it’s dry and seasoned, you can start using it immediately!
