Don’t Forget to Clean Your Fridge

Here’s a philosophical question: is a kitchen really a kitchen if it doesn’t have a fridge? The refrigerator is arguably the most important element in the kitchen. Yet, it’s also one that we often forget about when it comes to regular cleaning. Spillages or spoiled food can be a playground for bacteria, so follow this guide to keep things as safe as possible.

Step #1

Start by removing all the food items from your fridge. Discard any food that has gone past its expiry date (especially if has changed color, has an odor, or you can spot mold). Place perishable items in a cooler bag to keep them at a safe temperature while cleaning.

Step #2

If possible, unplug your fridge to save energy while you clean. Remove all the shelves, drawers, and removable parts, washing them separately with warm, soapy water. Let them air dry or wipe them down with a clean cloth.

Step #3

Mix a mild detergent with warm water and wipe the interior of the fridge. Pay special attention to any spills, stains, or sticky areas. For tougher stains, you can use a paste made from mixing baking soda with water, and gently scrub with a sponge or cloth. Rinse with clean water and dry with a cloth.

Step #4

Use a damp cloth to clean the door seals thoroughly. Make sure to remove any debris or food particles that may have collected in the grooves.

Step #5

Wipe down the exterior of the fridge, including the handles and control panel, with a mild cleaning solution. You want to avoid anything abrasive, including scouring pads, as this can damage the surface. Once all is clean and dry, you can replace the shelves and restock the fridge.
