Do Drinks Taste Better in a Glass?

There are so many different elements that make up a tasty drink. But if you ask most people, they’d probably tell you that all of these elements have to do with the drink itself and not at all to do with what’s holding the drink—such as the cup. But believe it or not, lots of people would argue that the drink actually tastes different when drunk out of a glass cup, or a plastic cup for that matter. So is this true?

Placebo Is Powerful

The main argument that naysayers bring to this equation is that it’s preposterous. They claim that there’s no way a cup could influence the taste of a drink. And if it can, that at the most it’s just a placebo effect. But here’s the real question: even if it’s just a placebo effect, shouldn’t that count for something?

To quote the fictional wizard Albus Dumbledore from the fantasy series Harry Potter, “Of course it’s happening inside your head. But why on earth should that make it not real?”

This idea is a powerful one and it makes you wonder a thing or two about how we experience the world around us. If we’re being completely honest, our drinks are more enjoyable when we drink them out of a glass cup. At the end of the day, shouldn’t our perceived experience, however convoluted and warped, matter?
