If you’ve ever seen Mad Men, you’re probably familiar with some of the vaguely ridiculous recipes made in 1950s American households. There were a lot of Jell-O molds, a lot of mayonnaise, and a lot of meat combined with sweet stuff. But some of these strange recipes might actually be fun to bring back for your next dinner party. Here are some ideas.

Ham Salad

Much like chicken salad, this salad uses cubed ham combined with mayonnaise, nuts, and onions. You can put in on a bun to serve at picnics or as a slider appetizer. In theory, if ham can be made into salad, than you could probably substitute any cubed lunch meat to make this dish. Go wild!

Peach Gelatin Salad

Unexpected salads are a bit of theme, and this one is no exception. This peach gelatin salad uses only five ingredients, including ginger ale of all things. This is a refreshing salad which is similar to peach Jell-O… With some extra stuff.

Hawaiian Pie

In keeping with the theme of suspending things in a substance, this pie is basically fruit suspended in cool whip, inside a graham cracker crust. It also uses sweetened condensed milk and nuts, and can be topped with mint for an extra refreshing touch.
