In life, there’s no better way to do things than to learn from experience. But if you just haven’t had enough time yet to clock decades of cooking practice, you might as well do the next best thing: learn from the experience of others. To that end, here are some tips from professional chefs who really know what they’re doing.

Taste as You Go

The biggest beginner mistake a home cook can make is not tasting their food enough, or not tasting it at all. After all, there’s no sense that can better tell you how a dish will turn out than your sense of taste. So taste often throughout the cooking process and let it guide you.

Trust Your Nose

That being said, it’s also important not to lose out on the highly powerful sense of smell. Your nose can tell you when something is off, done, or burnt much better than an expiration date or a timer can, so go ahead and trust it!

Mind The Pan

Often, in an effort to get things done quickly and efficiently, home chefs will put too much food in the pan or turn their heat up way too high. But this can lead to bad texture and burnt food way too easily, so really listen to your recipes when they say to put something on medium or low.
