Once you’ve picked out the perfect cookware, chances are that you’ll want to do everything to ensure that it lasts, especially when it’s an expensive, high-quality product like a nonstick pan. Still, taking care of such kitchenware can prove complicated. Here are some effective tips to help you ensure that your nonstick pans last and remain in top condition.

Low Heat Washing

Washing your pans at a high heat erodes the protective film on them. While doing so a few times most likely won’t make much of a difference, avoid turning this into a habit. Make sure to wash your dishes at a cold or medium heat.

Avoid Dishwashers

Dishwashers are super helpful when it comes to cleaning, being both convenient and efficient to use, not to mention requiring minimal effort on your part. Still, not everything is suited to dishwashers. Given the chemicals in dishwashers, it’s generally not a good idea to use them to wash nonstick pans. In order to protect the coating of your nonstick pans, stick to washing them by hand.

Using Cooking Sprays

While your pan may be nonstick, it’s always a good idea to give it the right assistance in order to protect it and keep it effective at its job. A lot of cooking sprays take away the pan’s stickiness they do wear out the coating, so make sure to use cooking sprays only when essential.

Picture this—you’re in your kitchen, armed with your favorite cuts of meat and a secret ingredient that’s about to take your culinary skills to the next level. What is this magical ingredient, you ask? Baking soda! Yes, that humble pantry staple that doubles as a superhero when it comes to tenderizing meat.

The Alchemy of Tenderizing

Baking soda works its magic by altering the pH level of meat. When combined with water and applied to the surface of the meat, baking soda helps break down tough proteins, making them more tender and easier to chew. It’s like having a secret tenderizing potion in your kitchen!

The Perfect Marinade Assistant

Baking soda isn’t just for sprinkling on the surface of meat. You can also incorporate it into your marinades to further enhance the tenderizing process. Simply mix a small amount of baking soda with your favorite marinade ingredients like soy sauce, garlic, and spices. Let the meat bathe in this flavorful concoction for a few hours (or overnight) to experience the magic unfold.

A Pinch Goes a Long Way

When using baking soda to tenderize meat, remember that a little goes a long way. Use only a small amount to avoid overpowering the flavor of your dish. Too much baking soda can leave a bitter taste, so exercise caution and start with a pinch. You can always adjust the amount in subsequent cooking experiments.

Patience is a Virtue

Tenderizing meat with baking soda requires some patience. Allow the meat to sit with the baking soda mixture for at least 15 minutes, but no more than an hour. This allows the baking soda to work its tenderizing magic without compromising the texture or taste of the meat.

Every good kitchen should include a spice cabinet. Sweet to savory, aromatic to piquant, ground herbs and spices can turn the blandest meal into something excellent.

Depending on your palate, some spices are used more than others. Sadly, those that don’t get as much love tend to clump together after a while.

The matting is caused by heat and humidity that creeps through the holes in the lid of spice shakers, known as the sifter fitment. It often means that no matter how hard you shake, those grinds are not coming out to play. And it can be tough to fit a spoon in the bottle.

It is always recommended to store spices in a cool, dry environment (think the pantry cupboard), but if the clumping has already occurred, it doesn’t mean that the seasonings have to be thrown out.

Instead of shaking, you want to twist.

Holding the bottle, turn the sifter fitment back and forth. Alternatively, hold the fitment still and twist the bottle itself. The action mimics that of a spice grinder on the clumped-up granules, making them fine enough to pass through the holes.

You’ll never have to eat insipid food again.

Ever wondered why your homemade steak doesn’t quite hit the mark like the one at your favorite restaurant? The secret might be simpler than you think: drying your meat before cooking. This one step, often missed in home kitchens, is crucial for that perfect sear and mouth-watering flavor. Let’s take a closer look.

Benefits of Drying Meat

Drying the surface of the meat allows for better browning of the meat. This is what gives grilled or seared meats their distinctive, rich flavor and appealing color.

Moisture on the surface of the meat can also lead to steaming. By drying your meat, you promote a more even texture, since the meat is less likely to steam in its juices.

Finally, seasoning also sticks better to dry meat. When the surface is wet, spices and herbs are more likely to slide off.

How to Properly Dry Meat

Before cooking, pat the meat dry with paper towels. This simple action absorbs excess moisture from the surface. If you wash your meat, let it rest on a rack for a few minutes to allow surface moisture to evaporate. For some cuts of meat, even placing them uncovered in the refrigerator for a few hours can help dry out the surface.

Ever feel like dishwashing is a bit like being stuck in a culinary version of Groundhog Day? You wash, you dry, you turn around, and there’s a mountain of dishes waiting for you all over again! Well, we can’t make the dishes disappear completely, but here are a few tips to make the process easier.

Pre-Rinse and Soak Strategically

If you’re handwashing, pre-rinsing and soaking dishes can make a significant difference. For dishes with dried or stubborn food residue, a quick soak in warm, soapy water can do wonders. It loosens up the particles, making them easier to wash off.

Organize Your Approach

When washing dishes, start by categorizing your dishes based on their type and degree of dirtiness. Wash the lightly soiled items first (like glasses and lightly used plates), and move towards the heavily soiled ones (like pots and pans). This method prevents the water from getting too dirty too quickly.

The Right Tools

The right tools can make dishwashing easier and quicker. For handwashing, use a high-quality dish soap that cuts through grease effectively, a scrub brush for tough residues, and a soft sponge for delicate items. When using a dishwasher, choose a detergent that suits your machine and water type (hard or soft) for best results.
