One of the biggest trends nowadays is recipe reels, which can be seen on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. These reels are usually no longer than a minute long, and the creator can be seen preparing a dish of any kind and demonstrating how to do it. In theory, they’re supposed to be quick tutorials—but are they actually an effective way to learn how to cook recipes?

Short Attention Spans

Most of our generation, unfortunately, have short attention spans. We won’t get into the “why” of it all, but there’s no secret that social media has played a part. But like any vicious cycle, our short attention spans have created a necessity for even more videos that are super quick and to the point.

This is why recipe reels are super effective for the modern generation. For some millennials or Gen Z-ers, it seems as though following a reel is the only way they’d ever cook something. But hey, if it gets us to learn a new skill, it must be a good thing, right?

Keeping It Simple

Ultimately, you actually can learn a great deal from recipe reels. While they don’t pack a crazy amount of information into each one, they keep it simple. This means that you’re learning the most important bits and not dwelling on unnecessary information. But even more crucial is the fact that the algorithms keep you coming back for more. This may not be a good thing from a screen-time perspective, but it’ll certainly help you become a better cook!
