Beer and soccer go together as naturally as macaroni and cheese, but millions of supporters of the beautiful game are being left high and dry.

It may seem unheard of to have a soccer World Cup without alcohol, but that is exactly what is happening at the moment, following a last-minute decision by Qatari officials. This is the first time that the sporting tournament has been held in a Muslim country where booze is forbidden.

When bidding for the right to host, Qatar promised that alcohol sales would be permitted. As such, it was decided that Budweiser, the official sponsor, would be allowed to sell its beer in designated areas within the stadiums. However, that all changed just prior to the opening match.

48 hours before the start of the tournament, Qatari officials declared that alcohol sales would be prohibited inside and outside stadiums. As such, thousands of beers have been left untouched. In light of the new developments, Budweiser announced that it will be donating all of its unsold beer to the winning team.

“New Day, New Tweet,” the brand wrote on Twitter. “Winning Country gets the Buds. Who will get them?”

Here’s hoping Qatar doesn’t claim the trophy.
